Systemic Integration of Transformative Technical and Nature-based Solutions to Improve Climate
Neutrality of European Cities and Regions and tackle Climate Change: the URBreath Approach
URBREATH is an ambitious urban regeneration initiative that integrates participatory approaches with cutting-edge technologies to revitalize neglected urban areas and advance climate neutrality. The project brings together communities, policymakers, and experts through Living Labs to co-create sustainable solutions, supported by digital innovations such as local digital twins and artificial intelligence.
A central technological partner in this endeavor is EXUS AI Labs, which plays a pivotal role in ensuring AI transparency and actionable insights. EXUS will develop an Explainable AI (XAI) tool to enhance the interpretability of complex algorithms, enabling stakeholders to better understand and trust AI-driven decision-making processes. Additionally, EXUS will design a sophisticated Water Infiltration Prediction Model to support urban hydrological planning.
Beyond these core contributions, EXUS remains adaptable to evolving urban needs, with the potential to develop additional predictive models tailored to specific city requirements. By combining advanced AI tools with participatory governance and nature-based solutions, URBREATH aims to establish a replicable framework for sustainable urban transformation across Europe, fostering climate resilience, social equity, and long-term environmental benefits.

URBREATH will revolutionize participatory urban planning by transforming its Living Labs (LLs) into dynamic co-design platforms for regenerative development. The project advances Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) assessment by integrating cutting-edge statistical physics, enhancing their functionality and impact.
For climate resilience, URBREATH employs robust statistical methods to generate 40 climate projections, combining multiple models and scenarios to address uncertainties. It delivers precise weather forecasts—deterministic (10-day) and probabilistic (6-month)—while refining representative weather files for extreme and typical conditions using high-resolution climate models.
The project strengthens community resilience through adaptive exposure modeling, incorporating dynamic population and economic vulnerability analyses. A novel financial framework will attract sustainable investments, supported by evidence-based business models.
Technologically, URBREATH develops a user-friendly Digital Twin tool to integrate simulations and democratize data access. Additionally, an innovative NBS KPI Catalogue, linked to a monitoring system, will streamline performance tracking and solution optimization.
By bridging gaps in planning, climate adaptation, and finance, URBREATH sets a new standard for equitable, data-driven urban regeneration.
