FRODDO is a pioneering research and innovation project funded by the European Union, designed to propel the evolution of connected and automated mobility (CCAM). With the rise of autonomous vehicle technologies, the need for integrated, fail-safe systems that can adapt to various environmental, traffic, and operational conditions has never been greater. FRODDO addresses this challenge by developing a comprehensive suite of methods and tools based on the principles of safe system design.
FRODDO employs cutting-edge AI, machine learning (ML), and advanced sensing technologies to create adaptable and secure operational design domains (ODDs). These ODDs are key to defining the safe operating conditions for automated vehicles, ensuring their seamless integration into diverse and complex road environments. Additionally, FRODDO leverages a federated digital twin environment that simulates real-world scenarios, allowing for the testing and validation of mobility solutions before they are deployed on the road.
By fostering close cooperation between public authorities, road operators, and industry, FRODDO aims to develop scalable and interoperable systems that enhance road safety, optimize traffic management, and support sustainable mobility.

Impact
The FRODDO project is expected to deliver a profound impact on the future of Connected and Cooperative Automated Mobility (CCAM) by fundamentally redefining how Operational Design Domains (ODDs) are developed, managed, and scaled in complex road environments. Its overall impact lies in creating a robust, federated cyber-physical infrastructure that supports dynamic and resilient ODD continuity through the integration of advanced sensing technologies, machine learning, hybrid artificial intelligence, and simulation capabilities. FRODDO adopts a safe systems design approach and positions the concept of Digital Twins (DT) at the core of its innovation strategy, allowing for real-time modeling and proactive management of physical and digital road infrastructure (PDI). This contributes to more adaptable, scalable, and sustainable mobility systems. By incorporating redundancy, interoperability, and human-centric design, the project ensures tolerance to vehicle-specific limitations and environmental unpredictability, enhancing safety and inclusivity. Furthermore, FRODDO fosters close collaboration between authorities, road operators, industry, and research institutions across 18 partners in 10 countries, ensuring that technological solutions align with legal, ethical, and societal expectations. The outputs of FRODDO, including a complete suite of tested tools, pilots in diverse cities, and a validated governance framework, are set to influence EU transport standards and pave the way for widespread adoption of future-ready, interoperable CCAM services.
