The Environmental Exposome And Health
Environmental factors profoundly impact our health, with millions of global deaths linked to unhealthy environments. Traditionally, we've addressed environmental risks in isolation, but in reality, we're exposed to multiple stressors simultaneously, creating a complex "exposome" – the totality of our environmental influences throughout life. Just as the human genome maps our genes, the exposome maps our environmental fingerprint. The ENVESOME project harnesses cutting-edge science, technology, and data to unlock the mysteries of the exposome. We're investigating how combined exposures truly affect us by: Collecting comprehensive environmental and biological data: Measuring air quality, noise, light, and analyzing human biological responses through biomonitoring and advanced cell experiments. Employing Artificial Intelligence (AI): Sifting through vast datasets to identify patterns and connect pollutant exposures to disease development.
Developing practical tools:
A mobile app for citizens: Empowering individuals to understand and reduce their personal pollution exposure.
An AI-powered decision-support system for policymakers: Guiding authorities in making informed environmental health regulations.
A chatbot for healthcare professionals: Providing up-to-date guidance on environmental health impacts for patient care.
By testing these tools in real-world urban settings, ENVESOME aims to translate scientific findings into tangible societal benefits. We will provide new evidence to update pollution limits, support targeted policies for healthier environments, and promote healthy habits to lessen pollution's negative health effects. This international, interdisciplinary effort is dedicated to protecting public health and fostering environmental sustainability for years to come.

Impact
ENVESOME will deliver far-reaching impacts across technology, science, and society, driving innovation, informing policy, and significantly improving public health. Driving Technological Advancement & Competitiveness: ENVESOME will be a catalyst for economic growth and innovation, fostering the creation of over new Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and generating new job opportunities within the critical IT, environmental, and biotechnology sectors. By developing cutting-edge solutions, the project will strengthen EU competitiveness on a global scale and equip policymakers with advanced tools for more effective environmental management.
Advancing Scientific Knowledge & Policy: Our scientific contributions will directly support and inform crucial EU regulations and ambitious WHO targets. ENVESOME will fuel new research initiatives, leading to the development of innovative data analysis tools. Crucially, our findings will contribute to the formulation of new regulations and policies specifically addressing environmental pollution and its significant health consequences, translating robust science into tangible action.
Fostering a Healthier Society: ENVESOME's ultimate impact lies in its commitment to public well-being. We aim for a significant reduction of 50% in environment-related illnesses and occupational health risks. By 2030, we anticipate that at least 15 EU Member States will reduce the number of deaths and illnesses related to hazardous chemicals, directly contributing to a healthier and safer future for European citizens.
