AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO ENHANCE FOOD SYSTEMS RESILIENCE, ADVOCATING FOR
FOOD SECURITY AND UNINTERRUPTED FOOD SUPPLY

SecureFood responds to the need to strengthen food systems and security by adopting an integrated, systems-thinking approach. The project acknowledges the complexity of food systems, treating them as interconnected networks involving various stakeholders, activities, and services related to food production and delivery. Bringing together a consortium of partners spanning the food supply chain, the work of SecureFood incorporates producers, industries, retailers, and entities responsible for coordinating resilience-building efforts at the national level.

The ultimate goal of SecureFood is to create an ecosystem of scientific knowledge, collaborative processes, and digital tools that contribute to evidence-based insights on risks and vulnerabilities in different food value chains. Focusing on key sectors such as grain, fruits and vegetables, fish and aquaculture products, and milk and dairy products, the project aims to safeguard food security both before and during crises.

Impact

The SECUREFOOD project is poised to generate a profound and multidimensional impact on the future of food systems in Europe and beyond. By adopting a systems-thinking approach, SECUREFOOD addresses the full complexity of food systems as interconnected networks of actors, processes, infrastructures, and services. Its core mission is to enhance the resilience and sustainability of food supply chains through the creation of an innovative ecosystem composed of scientific knowledge, digital tools, and collaborative governance mechanisms. The project’s impact rests on four interdependent pillars: (1) advancing scientific understanding of food system risks and drivers; (2) safeguarding food supply chains by assessing and strengthening systemic resilience beyond national strategies; (3) accelerating transformation through participatory and cross-sectoral governance; and (4) deploying state-of-the-art digital solutions such as early warning systems, digital twins, and decision-support tools to simulate scenarios, mitigate disruptions, and optimize supply chain functions.
Real-world case studies—such as the Ukraine grain crisis—anchor the project in urgent realities, while diverse tools are tailored to assess vulnerabilities and support timely, coordinated responses. These include tools like the Food Systems Resilience Management Tool (FSRM), the RESILOG route planner, and the Waste-SEC platform, each contributing measurable improvements in preparedness, sustainability, and food loss reduction. In parallel, a strong ethical, legal, and data protection framework underpins SECUREFOOD’s operations, ensuring trust and compliance while promoting the responsible use of AI and data technologies.
Ultimately, SECUREFOOD aims to become a transformative force in European food systems by promoting inclusive stakeholder collaboration, aligning with EU strategic agendas like the Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy, and shaping policy and innovation landscapes through validated methodologies and decision-support instruments. Its lasting impact will be a more secure, adaptable, and ethically governed food system—one capable of withstanding crises and delivering sustainable nutrition to all.
