Deployment and Assessment of Predictive modelling, environmentally sustainable and emerging digital technologies, and tools for improving the resilience of IWW against Climate change and other extremes

The PLOTO project focuses on enhancing the resilience of Inland Waterways (IWW) infrastructures and connected land-based infrastructures. The project aims to ensure reliable network availability under challenging conditions like extreme weather, accidents, and other hazards. The primary goal is to integrate downscaled climate change scenarios specific to IWW infrastructures with simulation tools and actual data. This integration is intended to aid authorities and operators in managing their infrastructures more effectively at both strategic and operational levels. The effectiveness and applicability of the PLOTO integrated platform and its tools will be validated through case studies in Belgium, Romania, and Hungary. This comprehensive approach aims to bolster the resilience and management of transport infrastructures against various environmental and man-made challenges.

Topic

Impact

Ensure navigability for inland waterways by maintaining significant capacity during extreme weather events.
Enhance the resilience of land, sea, and infrastructure to extreme weather and human-caused events, ensuring high capacity at the network level during disruptions.
Contribute significantly to the sustainability of transport systems through an increase in modal shift.
Ensure the resilience and smooth operation of passenger mobility, freight transport, and logistics networks on these infrastructures.
Increase the use of recycled materials within or across transport modes.
Reduce environmental impacts such as emissions, soil/water pollution, degradation of ecosystems, and fragmentation of habitats during construction, maintenance, operation, and decommissioning of infrastructure, in alignment with EU environmental legislation.
