Evidence-based Participatory Decision Making for Cancer Prevention through implementation research
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a prevalent cancer type linked to lifestyle choices, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. ONCODIR employs a blend of health policy analytics, social and behavioral sciences, AI-driven multi-omics, and retrospective data analytics to create evidence-based cancer prevention programs and personalized prevention strategies. It also focuses on the economic aspects, exploring cost-effective and sustainable financial models for CRC prevention. ONCODIR is building a technology ecosystem underpinned by AI reliability and privacy, aimed at offering recommendations shaped by community, policy, and social science inputs. The project outcomes will be tested across EU states with contributions from a broad range of experts. Part of the Cancer Mission cluster, ONCODIR's workplan promises impactful policy-supporting results for prevention and early detection.

Impact
The scientific impact of the project includes contributions to scientific publications and citations, the establishment of a public biobank and datasets, and the upskilling of healthcare providers and practices. Economically, the project anticipates more than a 5% increase in life years (LYs) and a 10% increase in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), along with a reduction in the costs of CRC tests. On a societal level, the project aims to identify approximately 170,000 new CRC cases and save around 153,000 EU citizens, with an indirect benefit to about 200,000 family members. Over the next five years, it is expected that 700,000 citizens will be positively impacted. The project will promote personalized care and treatment and ensure that over 5,000 citizens who are currently under-monitored will receive a CRC prevention program. Additionally, more than four national or regional prevention programs will be implemented.
