Inspiring citizen participation for enhanced community policing actions.

Community policing allows the police and the community to work together in new ways to solve problems of crime, disorder and safety, contributing to improving the quality of life for everyone in that community. INSPEC2T develops a sustainable framework for community policing that effectively addresses and promotes seamless collaboration between police and community.

INSPEC2T develops a sustainable framework for community policing that effectively addresses and promotes seamless collaboration between police and community.
In recent years, police forces have become increasingly present in social media and have embraced cyber-based social media for monitoring and investigating crime. Nonetheless, interaction between police and community is still a challenge. The trend and role of social media is crucial in the development of the community policing paradigm. More often than not, the police is not the first at the scene of crime, while bystanders share photos and information with the world through their social media accounts.
The project will take an innovative approach to the concept of community policing turning the wide adoption of social media into an asset for the police and thus the community. Every informed, educated and equipped (with a smartphone) citizen will be able to make our neighbourhoods a safer place.

Impact

INSPEC2T will culminate in a paradigm shift in which law enforcement agencies will serve and protect as ‘embedded’ members of the community instead of merely enforcing the law on the community. The INSPEC2T project enables strengthened and accelerated communication (and collaboration) between citizens and police forces and better community policing through more effective and efficient tools (mobile application, public portal), which allow enhanced crime reporting by allowing citizens and community to report incidents and perceived offences/crime more efficiently and effectively. The vision of INSPEC2T is to achieve community cohesion and a reduction in feelings of insecurity in every neighbourhood of Europe.
